We first began planning for the redesign and relaunch of Aromatics International's website in January 2014. A family-owned and operated company, Aromatics International sought to compete with the growing number of franchise essential oil sellers, including Young Living and doTERRA. Unique to theri business was a close relationship with the Aromahead Institute, an online and seminar-based school for aromatherapy professionals. Students primarily bought their essential oils from Aromatics and in turn, Aromatics had a desire to publish more engaging recipes and uses for their products on their new site. The challenge for the redesign was not only about refreshing the brand and creating a more user-friendly ecommerce experience, but importantly connecting the large-scale amount of items in their store with one another and with related recipes.
In my role as Art Director and Lead Designer on this project, I stepped in at the earliest planning states to strategize the site architecture and content planning. In addition to high-fidelity wireframes for key pages and consulting on the remaining ones with our Project Manager—Eva Wong—I created the user flow for the various methods of checkout (registered users, guests, PayPal checkout).
For design, the client, my team, and I went through several rounds of iterations on both the home page and the product page as we discussed available assets, branding, copywriting, restructuring, and editing. In the front-end implementation, I created the Style Guide and the mobile-friendly home page and product page. I also put extra time into creating some subtle elements of delight, including transitional animation on the main nav and an animated silhouette of lavender in the footer.
As part of their close ties with professional aromatherapists, Aromatics includes a full chemical and spectral analysis for each batch of an essential oil. Working with my brilliant dev—Erick Merchant—we created a visualization of the chemical properties of each essential oil. Special thanks to the talents of the two other designers on our team—David Henry and Jeremy Silver—who jumped in to help complete the project.
